The Belwood Respite Home is an alternative to psychiatric inpatient hospitalization that expands the continuum of services, intervention and support of individuals in crisis to stabilize and quickly return to their normal rhythm of daily activities. The Respite Home provides less restrictive, more normative environments in which to treat and support people experiencing psychological crises.


Process of Admission
A Crisis Service staff member assesses each client who either contacts a Milwaukee County crisis service is referred by an inpatient social worker or provider (through the crisis line at 414.257.7222)

A Mental Health Service Clinician (MHSC) responds to referrals within 24 hours to evaluate the need and appropriateness of respite care.

If admission to the Respite House is recommended, a clinician from the Crisis Service is assigned to coordinate the services and admission to the program.

Based on bed availability. Clients are admitted seven days a week between the hours 9 AM and 10 PM weekdays and 11:30 AM and 8 PM on weekends and holidays.

A MHSC works with the client throughout their stay at the Crisis Respite House

Average length of stay is 3 days, but can be based on individual need.

Admission Criteria

  • 18 years or older
  • Voluntarily willing to be admitted
  • Ambulatory
  • Currently experiencing an acute psychological crisis that is expected to resolve with short-term crisis intervention.
  • Free of acute or uncontrolled medical problems, infectious diseases are stable
  • Not in need of in-person medical management
  • Able to care for physical needs and basic hygiene
  • Free from a primary diagnosis of AODA (alcohol and other drug abuse)
  • Sober at time of assessment and free from substance intoxication/withdrawal if dually diagnosed.
  • At moderate or less risk of danger to self and others
  • Not on a police hold
  • Willing to participate I the treatment planning process
  • Able to actively participate as member of the Respite Home
